In a dramatic finish that will be remembered for years to come, Hatsumi Peterson delivered a walk-off grand slam Monday night, propelling Hartselle to a thrilling 13-9 victory over Athens and securing the Tigers' spot in the Class 6A, Area 15 softball championship.
The Tigers found themselves trailing 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but they refused to back down. After tying the game on three consecutive bases-loaded walks, Peterson stepped to the plate with two outs and crushed a game-winning home run that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. She finished the night with two hits and five RBIs, while Aubrey Mize added four hits and three RBIs to fuel the comeback. For Athens, Abby Lopez, Lexie Thornton, and Paisley Howell each contributed a hit and two RBIs.
With the win, Hartselle advances to the area championship, set for Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Sparkman Park in Hartselle, while Athens drops to the losers bracket.
Earlier in the tournament, Hartselle rolled past Decatur 11-2, powered by home runs from Amelia Fox and Aubree Peak. Fox finished with three hits and four RBIs, while Peak added two RBIs and RC Wolf chipped in a hit and two RBIs.
Athens also made a statement, crushing Muscle Shoals 14-1 behind Abby Lopez's two home runs. Lopez finished with three hits, while Rayne Brewer added a three-run homer and Linsley Gillman contributed three hits and an RBI.
In other area action, West Limestone claimed the area championship with an 8-2 win over Westminster Christian, as Katie Lyn Kyle struck out 10 batters. Aubrey Bethune had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, while Ella Yarbrough added two hits and two RBIs.
Lawrence County powered past Russellville 13-4, with Alivia Terry, Bella Cross, LA Norwood, and McKinley McCaghren all going deep. Cross led the way with two hits and three RBIs, while McCaghren added two hits and two RBIs.
Hatton saw its season end with a 9-0 loss to Deshler, despite hits from Adley Brackin and Celia Murray. Falkville dominated Decatur Heritage 14-0 to win the area championship, led by Carley Powers (three hits, two RBIs) and Ally Easter (three hits, one RBI), while Karsyn Echols struck out eight batters and added a hit and two RBIs. Falkville also defeated Decatur Heritage 18-3 in a second matchup, with Echols driving in four runs on two hits and striking out eight more. Lily Slayton added three hits and two RBIs, while Peyton Holloway and Carley Powers each had two hits and two RBIs. Stella Simms led Decatur Heritage with a hit and an RBI.
