This past weekend, the Castle Invitational near Evansville became a battleground for some of the best high school softball talent from Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. Among the contenders, the Logansport Lady Berries delivered a statement performance, finishing the prestigious tournament with an impressive 3-1 record against elite competition.
The weekend was a true test of resilience. The Berries opened Friday with a tough 12-2 loss to the top-ranked Class 4A team, Penn. However, they showcased their championship mettle by bouncing back immediately, securing a pivotal 5-1 victory over a powerhouse Daviess County (KY) squad featuring five future Division I players. That win set the tone for a dominant Saturday.
Logansport's Saturday slate was a masterclass in clutch pitching and timely hitting. First, they edged a strong Henderson County (KY) team, last year's state runner-up, in a tight 2-1 pitchers' duel. Sophomore Gracie Risley earned the win, and Brooklynn Hagerty closed it out with a stellar relief appearance for the save. The Berries then faced their toughest challenge yet: the defending Class 2A state champion and No. 1-ranked Tecumseh. Hagerty rose to the occasion, throwing a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts, coming just one hit batter shy of a perfect game in a commanding 2-0 victory.
The offensive highlights were just as crucial. In the win over Henderson County, the team rallied with three opposite-field hits in the fourth inning to plate two decisive runs. Against Tecumseh, they jumped ahead early, with Hagerty herself driving in two runs with a first-inning double as part of a nine-hit attack.
Now 4-1 on the season, the Lady Berries carry this momentum into Hoosier Conference East Division play, hosting Tipton on Tuesday.
In other local action, Cass faced a challenging weekend at Mississinewa, dropping two games. The Kings, playing without senior standout Amma Fitzhugh, struggled to generate offense. Pioneer also fell in a pair of games at Herk Hoffman Field, despite multi-hit efforts from players like Madyson Shaffer.
