ELKHART — Whether it was the sharp wind gusts or the course itself, the elements at Saturday’s Concord Invitational certainly made themselves known to all 12 teams competing at Bent Oak Golf Club. There were no players who shot under par and just three finished below 80 strokes. Two scores of 4-over-par 76 led the competition, but one was ruled better just by being present. “Definitely not, ...

ELKHART — The wind was howling, the greens were tricky, and the scores reflected just how tough conditions were at Saturday's Concord Invitational. Hosted at Bent Oak Golf Club, the tournament brought together 12 teams, but Mother Nature made sure no one had an easy day.

Not a single player managed to shoot under par, and only three golfers broke 80. The top two finishers both carded 4-over-par 76, but the medalist title went to the one who stuck around to claim it.

Fairfield senior Jake Elliott captured his second consecutive invitational victory, following up his win at the Wawasee Invitational earlier this month. Elliott was tied with Culver Academies' Hammer Breckelmans, but when scores were finalized, Breckelmans and his team had already left the course. That meant Elliott took home the trophy by default — but his play still deserved the recognition.

"I didn't hit the ball good, but it's whatever," Elliott said with a shrug, admitting he didn't feel like he played his best. Still, a win is a win, and the senior is now eyeing a three-peat at next weekend's Angola Invitational. That field will be significantly tougher, featuring Westview, Northridge, Fort Wayne Carroll, Guerin Catholic, and Crown Point.

"It'll be a great field of guys," Elliott said. "If I just play my own game and keep doing what I'm doing, I should be fine."

While Elliott shined individually, team scores soared across the board. Culver Academies took the top team spot with 327, followed by Penn (334) and Mishawaka Marian (336). Wawasee, which entered the tournament with a strong 9-1 record, finished fourth at 348, while Fairfield rounded out the top five with 349.

Wawasee's young roster showed promise but also inexperience. Three of the Warriors' five players were underclassmen, led by senior Preston Scherer, junior Hudson Cripe, sophomores Carson Scherer and Jack Shoemaker, and freshman Cash Walter. Carson Scherer was the team's top finisher, placing eighth individually with an 11-over 83.

Second-year coach Randy Woodcock wasn't discouraged by the tough outing. "It's a course that we don't play a lot," he said. "It's hard; the greens are definitely different than what we've been playing. We just didn't play great, and that's ultimately on us."

With a young core and a coach focused on growth, Wawasee remains a team to watch this season — even if this round gets flushed from memory.
