In a game that showcased everything we love about playoff baseball, St. John Bosco delivered a dramatic 2-1 walk-off victory over Cypress in 11 innings during Tuesday's Southern Section Division 1 first-round showdown. It was a pitcher's duel for the ages, and the kind of contest that reminds us why high school baseball is so special.
From the very first pitch, it was clear this would be a battle of aces. St. John Bosco's Julian Garcia was nothing short of dominant, tossing a perfect game through six innings and keeping Cypress hitless for eight frames. On the other side, Cypress left-hander Drew Slevcove matched Garcia nearly pitch for pitch, surrendering only a solo home run to Jack Champlin in the fifth inning.
Cypress showed their resilience in the seventh, knotting the score at 1-1. Jake De Laquil drew a walk, swiped second, advanced to third on a ground out, and beat the tag at home on a ground ball with the infield drawn in. It was the kind of heads-up, pressure baseball that defines postseason play.
With the game tied, both bullpens stepped up. St. John Bosco's Brayden Krakowski fired three scoreless innings in the ninth, 10th, and 11th. Cypress's Tate Belfanti matched him with zeros in the ninth and 10th. But in the bottom of the 11th, the Braves finally broke through. A leadoff walk to Jaden Jackson, followed by a stolen base with two outs, set the stage for Moises Razo. The sophomore delivered a game-winning single to left field, sending the Braves into celebration mode.
"That was one of the better played games in high school baseball," St. John Bosco coach Andy Rojo said. "John Weber knows how to coach. Their guy went toe to toe with Julian."
For Garcia, this playoff moment carried extra meaning. The senior missed last year's Division 1 title run while recovering from arm surgery, making Tuesday's performance even more special. "I woke up super pumped," Garcia said. "I was nervous last night."
With two straight hitless starts under his belt, Garcia is heating up at exactly the right time. The Braves advance in the bracket, and if this game was any indication, they're ready for whatever comes next.
