When Tayden Martin took the mound Monday night at Heinz-Rotter Field, he wasn't just pitching for a win—he was pitching to end a 12-year drought. And with a complete game effort that had his coach calling it his best performance yet, Martin delivered.

The Rochester Warriors' starter went all seven innings, striking out five and walking just one, leading his team to an 8-4 victory over Castle Rock in the Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal. It wasn't just any win—it was Rochester's first district victory since 2014, breaking a streak that had haunted the program for more than a decade.

For context, the last time Rochester won a district game, Dylan Fosnacht made national headlines by throwing 194 pitches in a 17-inning marathon against La Center—a performance that landed him on ESPN. Since then, the Warriors had either missed districts entirely or gone two-and-out. Until now.

"I just wanted to get out ahead early, pound the zone and let my guys work," Martin said after the game. "This is the group of guys that can make state."

Martin's approach was simple but effective. He mixed his fastball with a curveball and changeup that he spent the entire offseason refining. That dedication paid off Monday, as he kept Castle Rock hitters off balance all night. The Rockets managed eight hits and four runs (three earned), but Martin never let the game slip away.

Rochester's offense gave him early support, scoring three runs in the third inning and adding two more in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead. Martin helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk. Rodriguez added a key performance, reaching base three times with two runs scored and a stolen base.

For head coach Brad Quarnstrom, Martin's growth has been a season-long story. "He progressively got better, but his performance tonight was his best," Quarnstrom said. "By doing what he did tonight is a sign of things to come."

Monday's win also carried a bit of revenge. Last spring, Castle Rock eliminated Rochester in a district elimination game, rallying for three unanswered runs in the fifth and sixth innings. This time, it was the Rockets who made the critical mistakes, committing three errors—two on pickoff attempts—that helped fuel Rochester's rally.

The Warriors (13-7) now advance to Tuesday's semifinal against Seton Catholic, the Trico League champion. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at Harmony Sports Complex in Vancouver. A win would send Rochester to the state tournament for the first time since that memorable 2014 run.

Martin won't be making any ESPN highlight reels this time. But for a program that's waited 12 years for this moment, his complete-game masterpiece might be even more meaningful.
