The dream of a perfect season is over for the Adna High School baseball team. After cruising through their early schedule with an unblemished record, the Pirates finally met their match on Friday afternoon, suffering a 7-3 home loss to Toutle Lake in a Central 2B League showdown.
Adna's undefeated run came to an end in a game that turned on a single, frustrating inning. Holding a narrow 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, Toutle Lake exploded for five two-out runs. The rally was extended by a crucial hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, opening the floodgates for a series of RBI walks and singles that broke the game open.
While the loss stings, Adna head coach Jake Overbay is choosing to see it as a valuable lesson. "Play with more of a chip on your shoulder," Overbay said. "When you go undefeated, you start to get complacent. This is good for us... It was a good growing pain."
The box score tells the tale of two pitching performances. Toutle Lake's Hanson was the anchor, delivering a complete-game victory, allowing just one earned run over seven strong innings while also contributing two hits and two RBI at the plate. For Adna, starter Jack Pennington was one strike away from escaping the fateful fourth inning before the rally began, ultimately charged with six earned runs.
Offensively, Adna showed flashes. Bright went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Nakano drove in two runs. However, the Pirates couldn't string together the timely hits needed to overcome the deficit, with a key baserunning mistake also halting momentum.
This loss echoes a pattern from last season, where an undefeated start was later followed by playoff disappointment. For a team with championship aspirations, this early-season reality check might be the spark they need. As any athlete knows, sometimes you learn more from a hard-fought loss than from an easy win. The Pirates will look to regroup, refocus, and channel that hunger as they continue their quest for a state title.
