When you're one of Michigan's top football recruits, every decision matters—even which spring sport to play. For Novi Detroit Catholic Central junior Gideon Gash, that meant swapping his lacrosse stick for a pair of track spikes.

Gash, a premier MHSAA football prospect, made the tough call to leave the lacrosse field behind this season. The reason? His recruiting calendar was simply too packed. "I love lacrosse. I've been playing it my whole life," Gash said after the Catholic League Bishop Division championship meet. "But I would have to miss a ton of games because I'm traveling all the time. Track gives me a lot more time to travel for football camps and recruiting visits."

The transition has been anything but a setback. In fact, Gash has already etched his name into the school record books. In just his second high school long jump competition, he set a new Catholic Central mark. At the league meet, he soared to a personal-best 22 feet, 8 inches to take first place.

"I try to help the team out as much as I can," Gash said. "I fill in the 100 and some relays, but long jump has transitioned into my main event."

But the day's biggest highlight came in the 100-meter dash, where Gash lined up alongside his older brother, Samson Gash—a Michigan State football signee and the defending state champion. Samson took first with a blistering 10.63 seconds, while Gideon finished just behind at 10.82. It was the first time the brothers had ever raced each other in high school competition.

"Seeing his progress... he's never run track before because he's always been a lacrosse player," Samson said. "He had the courage to put it away and really focus on his speed. He's getting better every week."

For Gideon, the trade-off is clear: a few laps around the track instead of a lacrosse field, all in the name of chasing his football dreams. And if his early track results are any indication, that speed will serve him well under the Friday night lights.
