Rangers are preparing for the departure of 19-year-old midfielder Bailey Rice, whose contract at Ibrox is set to expire this summer. It's shaping up to be a bittersweet end to a spell that promised so much but never quite delivered at the senior level.
Rice was considered a major coup for Rangers when he joined from Motherwell back in 2022. Since then, however, he's managed just 16 first-team appearances totaling fewer than 500 minutes of action—a stark reminder of how injuries can derail even the most promising careers.
A knee injury sustained in November 2025 sidelined him for months. Now, as he nears a return to full fitness this May, the race to secure his signature is heating up. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Premier League clubs have had their eyes on Rice since his debut, but he's not entirely convinced the hype is justified.
"There isn't a single club I'm aware of in the Premier League who don't have scouts up in Scotland keeping an eye on the emerging talents there," Brown noted. "So when somebody is coming out of Rangers with a reputation like his, these clubs will know all about him already."
Still, Brown was cautious: "He hasn't played much for the Rangers' first team because of injuries and other issues, and you don't know the full story until he's playing regularly." His verdict? Any club signing Rice is taking a gamble, not buying a sure thing.
Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace have all held talks with the youngster's camp. Meanwhile, interest from abroad is just as strong—Schalke, Stuttgart, and Ajax are reportedly monitoring the situation, offering Rice a potential route to European football.
So what kind of player are these clubs chasing? Rice is a tidy, left-footed midfielder who thrives in a deep-lying role, dictating the tempo of the game with calm and composure. He also offers versatility, capable of slotting into defense when needed. For a 19-year-old, that kind of adaptability is a valuable asset.
Whether he's ready for the Premier League or better suited to a step up in a different league remains to be seen. But one thing's for sure: this summer, Bailey Rice will have plenty of options.
