As the NFL free-agent market continues to simmer, one name stands out among the remaining unsigned talent: veteran defensive tackle D.J. Reader. After spending the 2024 season with the Detroit Lions, the 31-year-old interior force is drawing attention from teams looking to bolster their defensive front.

Pro Football Focus analyst Bradley Locker recently pinpointed the Las Vegas Raiders as the ideal landing spot for Reader, who checks in as the No. 21 overall player on PFF's free-agent board. The Raiders entered the draft with clear needs on the defensive line, but opted to address the secondary instead of adding interior depth. That leaves a gaping hole in the middle of their defense—one that a seasoned veteran like Reader could fill immediately.

"Despite suggestions that the Raiders would capitalize on a Day 2 rich with defensive tackle talent, the team instead opted to grab Arizona defensive back Treydan Stukes," Locker wrote. "In turn, that leaves Las Vegas in major need of an interior defender."

While Reader may not be at his absolute peak—he dominated from 2021 to 2023—he remains a highly productive and reliable presence on the interior. Last season, he posted a 72.6 PFF pass-rush grade and a 10.5% pass-rush win rate, ranking 27th among qualified defensive tackles. For a team like the Raiders, who already feature star edge rusher Maxx Crosby, adding Reader could create a formidable one-two punch upfront.

The question now is what Reader prioritizes in his next chapter. At 31, he could chase a championship with a contender, or he could embrace a larger role with a team like Las Vegas that's still building its identity. "The 31-year-old Reader might prefer to sign with a team that's closer to contention," Locker noted. "Nevertheless, he would continue to build next to Maxx Crosby on the team's new-look defense."

For now, Reader remains one of the top free agents available, and his market is expected to heat up as teams reassess their needs following the draft. Whether he lands in Sin City or elsewhere, one thing is clear: this veteran still has plenty of impact left in the trenches.
