Beth Potter came agonizingly close to victory in Yokohama for the second year running, while Olympic champion Alex Yee made a solid return to triathlon competition on Saturday.
The 34-year-old Potter, who claimed bronze at the Paris Olympics and finished third overall in the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Series, crossed the line in 1 hour 50 minutes 15 seconds—just two seconds behind Sweden's Tilda Mansson in a thrilling sprint finish.
It was déjà vu for the Scottish athlete, who narrowly missed gold in the same event last year when France's Jeanne Lehair edged her out. This time, Lehair settled for third, while Potter and Mansson battled shoulder-to-shoulder throughout the race before the Swede's final surge made the difference.
Great Britain's women showed impressive depth, with all four competitors finishing inside the top 15. Sian Rainsley placed 10th, Jess Fullagar took 11th, and Kate Waugh crossed in 14th—a strong collective performance that bodes well for the season ahead.
In the men's race, all eyes were on Alex Yee as the 27-year-old Olympic gold medalist returned to World Triathlon Championship Series action for the first time in 18 months. Having spent much of 2025 focused on marathon running—where he became the second-fastest Briton in history last December—Yee showed he hasn't lost his competitive edge, finishing just 44 seconds behind winner Matthew Hauser.
Hauser made history as the first man to successfully defend his Yokohama title, with Miguel Hidalgo taking second. The battle for third went down to the wire, with Australia's Luke Willian pipping Vetle Thorn in a sprint finish. Yee's British teammates Jack Willis and Max Stapley finished eighth and 15th respectively.
Great Britain also shone in the para triathlon events. Henry Urand claimed gold in the PTS3 category, with teammate Ryan Taylor finishing fifth, while Josh Landmann took sixth in the PTWC classification. Hannah Moore added to the medal tally with a silver in the women's PTS4 event.
With Potter's podium consistency and Yee's promising return, British triathlon is in strong form as the World Championship Series continues to build momentum toward the season's climax.
