In a season lacking pizazz on Muskingum Valley diamonds, there is still some developing postseason potential, Sam Blackburn writes.

While this season on Muskingum Valley diamonds may lack the usual sparkle, don't sleep on the postseason potential brewing beneath the surface. Teams are beginning to find their stride, and the race for playoff berths is shaping up to be more competitive than many expected.

Sheridan is making a strong statement early, improving to 7-4 with an emphatic 12-2 win over visiting Philo on Tuesday, April 14, in Reading Township. The Generals remain unbeaten in Muskingum Valley League play, and a key reason for their success has been the play of Cole Cashdollar. The standout was the first to cross the plate in the decisive win, and he's emerging as one of the top returning players in the area. Coach Josh Coleman's squad is showing the kind of depth and discipline that could carry them deep into the postseason.

On the other side, Philo is far from finished. Despite the lopsided score, the Electrics have multiple key returners who are hungry to compete for a top spot in the Muskingum Valley League-Small School Division. Players like Jack Lincicome, who made a diving stop and threw a runner out from his back during the loss, are showing the defensive grit that could turn close games into wins down the stretch. Shortstop Garrett Tom also flashed his glove, going after balls in the hole and making diving stops—a sign that Philo's defense is playoff-ready even if the scoreboard didn't reflect it this time.

For Sheridan, players like Logan Jones (who scored in the third inning) and Donny Helber (who fielded ground balls cleanly) are providing steady contributions. Landon Foster took the mound for Philo, and while the result wasn't what he wanted, the experience will be invaluable as the season progresses. Hunter Hoffer also showed his bat in the loss, connecting on a pitch against Sheridan's pitchers.

What does this mean for the Muskingum Valley landscape? It suggests that while the season may lack the usual sizzle, there's plenty of substance. Sheridan looks like a legitimate threat to make noise in the playoffs, and Philo has the defensive foundation to bounce back. Keep an eye on these teams—they could be the ones making headlines when it matters most.
