The old hockey adage says a series doesn't really start until the home team loses. After dropping two games at Ball Arena, the Minnesota Wild put that theory to the test in Game 3—and it paid off in a big way.

The Colorado Avalanche suffered their first loss of the postseason Saturday night, falling 5-1 to the Wild at Grand Casino Arena. Nathan MacKinnon scored the lone goal for Colorado, but by then the Avalanche were already trailing by three. It was a night where Minnesota simply outworked the visitors in nearly every facet of the game.

"We’ve got to do more to make that game a lot more even than it was offensively and defensively," Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said. "That wasn’t a detail thing for me. That was a determination and competitive loss tonight. They did a lot more than us to win that hockey game."

The goaltending situation added another layer of drama. Scott Wedgewood got the start but was pulled after allowing three goals on 12 shots. Mackenzie Blackwood stepped in for his playoff debut and his first in-game action since April 14, stopping 12 of 13 shots. Bednar explained the switch as a chance to spark the team and see if Blackwood could shut the door the rest of the way.

Now, the series shifts to a pivotal Game 4. The Wild have a golden opportunity to head back to Denver with the series tied, and the Avalanche find themselves in unfamiliar territory—needing to respond after their first postseason loss.

"They know what they have to do," Blackwood said. "I’ve got the most confidence that they’re going to come out hard and play the right way."

For Avalanche fans, the message is clear: this is where champions show their mettle. The team that wears the burgundy and blue will need to dig deep, regroup, and bring their A-game when it matters most. Game 4 isn't just another game—it's the kind of moment that defines a playoff run. And for those of us who love the game, there's nothing quite like watching how a team responds when their backs are against the wall.
