The Ontario Reign have grabbed the upper hand in their Pacific Division Semifinals series, defeating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 2-1 in a thrilling Game Three. The victory gives the Reign a 2-1 series lead in the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs, setting the stage for a pivotal Game Four.
The game started quietly enough, but the Firebirds found their rhythm late in the first period. Over the final eight minutes, Coachella Valley dominated possession, firing 10 of the last 12 shots of the frame. Forward Jani Nyman capitalized on that pressure, scoring to give the Firebirds a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period was a defensive battle, with both teams trading seven shots apiece. Coachella Valley had a power-play opportunity but couldn't convert, and the score remained 1-0 as the teams headed to the final frame.
That's when the Reign turned the game on its head. Ontario came out flying in the third period, outshooting the Firebirds 5-0 in the first seven minutes. Forward Aatu Jamsen tied the game early, and just minutes later, Logan Brown buried the go-ahead goal. Coachella Valley didn't register their first shot of the period until the 10:35 mark, and while they outshot the Reign 6-3 the rest of the way, Ontario goaltender Erik Portillo was unbeatable down the stretch.
Portillo was the story of the night, stopping 27 of 28 shots for an incredible .964 save percentage. His performance kept the Reign in control and sealed the victory. On the other side, Firebirds netminder Nikke Kokko turned aside 22 of 24 shots for a .917 save percentage, but it wasn't enough to overcome Ontario's third-period surge.
With the series now 2-1 in favor of the Reign, all eyes turn to Game Four. Can Portillo replicate his heroics, or will the Firebirds find a way to even the series? One thing's for sure—this Pacific Division battle is just heating up.
