The UConn Huskies are doing what they do best—winning championships. For the sixth consecutive season since rejoining the Big East, HookC has clinched at least a share of the regular-season title, and they made sure to do it in style. On Friday night, UConn (32-23, 15-5 Big East) dominated Villanova (18-30, 4-16 Big East) with an emphatic 8-0 shutout that showcased everything that makes this team special.
At the heart of the victory was outfielder Chris Polemeni, who delivered a performance worthy of the occasion. "It feels amazing," Polemeni said after the game. "Coming into the program, I know we're known for winning championships and we all expected it. It's just about how we perform and getting it done." And perform he did—accounting for half of UConn's runs with four RBIs, while also starting and finishing the scoring for the Huskies.
The designated hitter wasted no time making an impact. In the second inning, Polemeni launched an oppo-shot to right field that barely cleared the blue padding, scraping the black chain-link fence for a solo home run. "Just staying simple and doing damage early in the count," he explained. "Advantage counts, I'm always looking to do damage until I have to shorten up, just like with runners in scoring position. Just staying short and do damage, that's it."
This marks the second straight weekend where Polemeni has delivered a big home run, following his grand slam in the series finale against Seton Hall last weekend—a game UConn won 7-3. While that solo shot would eventually stand as the game-winning run, Polemeni wasn't done yet. In the seventh inning, with the bases loaded and two outs, he ripped a double into the left-field gap. The ball bounced off the wall and took an unlucky ricochet in front of center fielder Jack Roventini, clearing the bases and putting the game well out of reach.
Even a clean fielding play might not have saved Villanova, especially with a hobbling Rob Rispoli on the basepaths—he had reached earlier after being hit by a pitch on his left knee. Shortstop Michael Whooley dropped the ball on the relay transfer, sealing the Huskies' commanding lead.
In between Polemeni's heroics, Rispoli added his own fireworks with a three-run home run in the third inning over the Big East Championship banner. It was a fitting touch for a night that celebrated yet another conference title for a program that has made championship baseball its identity.
