In the heart of New York City, where skyscrapers dominate the skyline and green space is a luxury, lacrosse is finding an unlikely home. CityLax, a non-profit organization backed by the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL), is rewriting the narrative of what it means to play the sport in an urban environment. Despite lacrosse's deep roots in the region—dating back to indigenous communities in the 1100s—the modern game has long been associated with the sprawling suburbs of Long Island, Albany, and Rochester. These areas boast the space and resources to build the 60-by-110-yard fields the sport demands, leaving NYC's concrete jungle at a disadvantage.

The challenge is as much financial as it is logistical. Youth lacrosse is an expensive endeavor, with annual costs exceeding $1,000 per child. According to the National Survey of Children's Health, only 34% of children from the lowest-income families participate in organized sports, compared to 68% from the highest-income households. This economic divide has made it nearly impossible for underserved NYC communities to compete with their more affluent suburban counterparts. But CityLax is determined to change that.

By partnering with the PLL and leveraging a rich history of success stories, CityLax is transforming both the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) and the sport itself. While the organization has yet to produce a professional lacrosse player, its impact is undeniable in other ways. CityLax boasts an impressive 99% graduation rate for students who have gone through its program—far exceeding the 83% average for NYC schools without such a partnership. This achievement speaks volumes about the program's ability to foster discipline, teamwork, and academic focus.

Through its work, CityLax is proving that lacrosse isn't just a suburban pastime—it's a tool for empowerment. By giving underdog NYC students access to the sport, the organization is slowly but surely diversifying the game's talent pool and creating opportunities that extend far beyond the field. Whether it's on the artificial turf or in the classroom, CityLax is laying the groundwork for a more inclusive future, one student at a time.
