Lee Smith has been the Players Championship executive director since 2018. He will add running the TPC Sawgrass to his resume.

In a move that signals a bold new chapter for one of golf's most iconic venues, Lee Smith is stepping up to lead both The Players Championship and TPC Sawgrass. Since taking the reins as executive director of The Players in 2018, Smith has already made his mark on the PGA Tour's flagship event. Now, he's adding the title of Vice-President of TPC Sawgrass to his resume, effectively uniting the tournament and its legendary home course under a single, powerful vision.

"It's all about riding the current momentum and taking it to yet another level," Smith says, and he means business. With the PGA Tour's announcement last week, Smith is now tasked with blending the day-to-day operations of the course with the high-stakes energy of the tournament itself. For a career PGA professional who honed his skills running Liberty National and the FedEx Cup Playoff event, the Northern Trust, this new challenge is exactly what he's been preparing for.

"While we have significant momentum going at both places, I think the opportunity is to really add gasoline to that momentum and provide a unified vision," Smith explains. "Instead of two separate business units that just communicate, we can take advantage of my experience in the club world and the event world to bring those two together."

In his expanded role, Smith will lead overall strategy, planning, and execution for The Players, while also having full oversight of TPC Sawgrass operations. This means coordinating everything from competition and broadcast to ticketing, security, finance, marketing, and partnerships. He'll also oversee capital projects, infrastructure investment, and property development at the course, ensuring that tournament needs align seamlessly with year-round club operations.

Don't worry—the familiar faces at TPC Sawgrass aren't going anywhere. General Manager Matt Borocz and Director of Golf Brian Riddle will remain in their positions, providing continuity on the ground. Meanwhile, the Tour will hire a new Players tournament director to handle day-to-day operations, freeing Smith to focus on the big picture: strategy, alignment, and performance.

"I think this role provides the opportunity to put two flagship assets of the PGA Tour together under one vision," Smith says. "It really leverages the momentum and the growth that's already been created to get bigger and better."

For golf fans and players alike, this unified leadership promises a more seamless experience—from the first tee at TPC Sawgrass to the final putt at The Players. And with Smith at the helm, the future looks brighter than ever.
