James Harden and Donovan Mitchell simply need to be better.

The Cleveland Cavaliers fought back from an 18-point deficit to tie the game against the Detroit Pistons midway through the fourth quarter, but costly mistakes down the stretch led to a 111-101 loss in Game 1. For a team that prides itself on resilience, this one stings—especially with turnovers and missed opportunities proving to be the deciding factors.

Let's break down the player grades, keeping in mind that a "B" grade means the player met our usual expectations.

James Harden: C+
Harden was brought in precisely for moments like this—to provide steady ball-handling, playmaking, and to take some pressure off Donovan Mitchell. He delivered on that promise during the regular season and parts of the first-round series against the Toronto Raptors. But in Game 1, we saw a version of Harden that looked a step slow and careless with the ball. Seven turnovers from your starting point guard is simply unacceptable, especially against a team that struggles in half-court offense. Those giveaways allowed Detroit to race out in transition and grab easy baskets. To his credit, Harden scored seven straight points in the fourth quarter to tie the game, but the damage was already done. If he protects the ball earlier, the Cavs never dig that hole.

Donovan Mitchell: C
Mitchell hasn't looked like himself since Game 2 of the first round. He's now scored fewer than 25 points in six straight games, and his aggression driving to the rim has vanished. In Game 1, he attempted just one shot in the restricted area and earned only two free-throw attempts. Without his elite scoring threat, the rest of his game suffers—and so does the entire team. Twenty-three points on 9-of-19 shooting won't cut it in a road playoff game. The Cavs needed a big performance from one of their core four to steal this one, and Mitchell didn't provide it.

Turnovers were a team-wide issue, but the Cavs' stars simply need to be better. In a series where every possession matters, Cleveland can't afford to hand Detroit easy chances. Game 2 is a must-win, and both Harden and Mitchell will need to step up.
