A new heritage blue plaque is set to honor a foundational moment in English football history: the site of the first official home match for the England women's national team. The historic game took place at Nuneaton's Manor Park pitch in 1973, where England delivered a stunning 8-0 victory over Scotland.

This tribute coincides with a major milestone for the Lionesses, who will play their 500th international match against Iceland this Saturday. To celebrate, the Football Association has planned a week of festivities, beginning with a World Cup qualifier against Spain at Wembley Stadium. Over 50 former Lionesses will form a guard of honor, connecting the team's present to its hard-fought past.

The 1973 match was a landmark event, featuring pioneers like Pat Mitchell-Firth. At just 16 years old, she scored England Women's first-ever hat-trick in front of 1,308 spectators. Mitchell-Firth, who will attend the plaque unveiling, went on to score nine goals in 11 caps before a career-ending injury at 21.

This recognition is long overdue. For decades, the women who built the game faced immense obstacles, including a 50-year FA ban imposed in 1921 that deemed football "quite unsuitable for females." It wasn't until 1971, following the formation of the Women's Football Association, that the ban was lifted, paving the way for that first official home cap.

Originally, players received only homemade caps. It took until 2023 for the FA to formally recognize these trailblazers as the original Lionesses, issuing official caps to all past and present players. The plaque at Manor Park will stand as a permanent testament to their courage and skill—a cornerstone moment that helped lay the foundation for the global powerhouse the Lionesses are today.
