The MLB season is heating up as we head into the eighth week of regular-season play, and while it's still early, several teams are already making their postseason cases. Among them, the Pittsburgh Pirates are not just in the playoff hunt—they're within striking distance of the division crown. And now, it looks like reinforcements are on the way.
Reports are buzzing that young ace pitcher Jared Jones could return as early as May 26. He's currently on a rehab assignment in Double-A, but once he's back, he'll bring a massive boost to the Pirates' rotation. Jones suffered an elbow injury just before the 2025 season, which was a tough blow for Pittsburgh's pitching staff.
Even with a 4.14 ERA during his 2024 rookie campaign, Jones showed plenty of promise. He made 22 starts after a rapid climb through the minor leagues—a promotion that surprised many experts, who expected him to stay in the minors for a few more seasons. But a dominant 2023 minor league season and an impressive spring in 2024 fast-tracked his rise to the majors.
Once in the big leagues, Jones quickly became a key piece of the Pirates' rotation, consistently lighting up the radar gun with fastballs ranging from 96 to 100 mph. Now, the Pirates could have another ace to pair alongside Paul Skenes at the top of the rotation. Both bring elite velocity, though Skenes currently has a more polished and diverse pitch arsenal.
Drafted in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft, Jones worked his way through the organization before making his debut in 2024. In 22 starts that season, he logged 121.2 innings, struck out 132 batters, and posted a 6-8 record. With a rotation featuring Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jones, and Braxton Ashcraft, the Pirates might just have the best young rotation in the league.
