The Detroit Pistons arrived back in the Motor City with a clear message: it's time to lock in. After splitting the first four games of their playoff series against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Pistons know exactly where things went wrong—and it starts on defense.
Following a tough 112-103 loss in Game 4 that evened the series at 2-2, the Pistons were left frustrated by more than just the final score. The free-throw disparity was glaring—Cleveland attempted 34 foul shots to Detroit's 19—but the team is refusing to make excuses. As the series shifts back to Detroit for Game 5, the focus is squarely on returning to the elite defensive form that made them a 60-win team during the regular season.
"We just were not focused and playing playoff-level basketball," said Ausar Thompson. "We cannot worry about the whistle. The refs cannot lose us the game. There are a lot of things that we did on our own that got us in this situation, and we have to be better."
That self-awareness is crucial. In Games 1 and 2, the Pistons defense was suffocating. They held the Cavaliers to just 99 points per game, with Cleveland shooting only 43.5% from the field and a cold 30% from three-point range. The defensive net rating was an impressive 107, making the Cavs—who boasted the sixth-best offense in the league during the regular season (113.2 rating)—look completely out of sync.
Physicality was the key. Detroit forced Cleveland into an average of 15.5 turnovers over the first two games, with James Harden himself committing 5.5 per game. But as the series has progressed, that defensive edge has dulled. The Cavaliers have adjusted, and the Pistons have lost their grip on the game's tempo.
"There is a lot we can take away from this series," Thompson added, "but we have to play our brand of basketball. We cannot go out there focusing on the refs. We have to be better."
For Pistons fans, the message is clear: expect a renewed defensive intensity in Game 5. The team knows that their path back to control of this series runs through their own effort, not through a whistle. And if they can recapture that early series swagger, this series could look very different very quickly.
