Piscataway junior Sumedh Shingala doesn't light up the radar gun with triple-digit heat, but he's proving that pitching smarts and a deep bag of tricks can be just as dominant. This spring, the left-handed standout is enjoying a breakout season—and fans have taken notice.
Shingala was voted the MyCentralJersey Readers Choice Player of the Week after an impressive stretch on the mound. He tossed his second five-inning no-hitter of the season, striking out 12 and walking four in a win over Highland Park. His first no-no came back on opening day, where he fanned 11 and walked just two against New Brunswick.
But the accolades didn't stop there. On May 14, Shingala delivered four shutout innings in the Ray Cipperly Greater Middlesex Conference Invitational quarterfinal, allowing just one hit, no walks, and racking up 10 strikeouts. His performance set the stage for a dramatic 11-5 comeback win, fueled by Dominick Summonte's grand slam in a seven-run sixth inning.
What's behind Shingala's surge? According to his coach, Rob Stoddard, it's a combination of confidence, preparation, and an "arsenal of pitches." Shingala has worked tirelessly in the offseason, playing with the Baseball Warehouse and adjusting his diet to eat healthier. The result? His fastball has jumped from the low 70s to the low 80s, and his strikeout numbers have soared.
"I don't have that velocity where I can just blow it by most people," Shingala explained. "Having that second pitch, that third pitch where you can trust it to go in for a strike—that's what matters more."
The numbers back him up. Through 32⅔ innings, Shingala has racked up 66 strikeouts with a 3.86 ERA. He's formed a potent one-two punch with fellow starter Brady Gallogly, and his coach credits catcher Jason Mann for his work behind the plate. Whether it's a changeup, curveball, or even an occasional knuckleball, Shingala is proving that a smart pitcher with a full toolbox can dominate—no 95 mph fastball required.
