The Pittsburgh Pirates’ bullpen suffered another painful collapse Friday night, as the team let a commanding six-run lead slip away in a heartbreaking 11-9, 10-inning loss to the Philadelphia Phillies at PNC Park.

For five innings, everything was clicking for the Pirates (24-21). They erupted for six runs off Phillies ace Aaron Nola in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Oneil Cruz’s two-run single up the middle and a Brandon Lowe two-run homer to right—snapping a personal 0-for-10 slump. Marcell Ozuna followed three batters later with a two-run blast to left-center, giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about.

Lowe stayed hot, leading off the fifth with his second solo homer of the night, and Spencer Horwitz added a run in the sixth on a throwing error, pushing the lead to 8-3. But the Phillies (22-23) refused to go quietly.

Kyle Schwarber turned the game on its head. After homering in the fifth, he crushed his second two-run shot of the night in the seventh—his ninth home run over the last eight games—cutting the deficit to 8-5. Then came the ninth inning implosion. Closer Gregory Soto, tasked with protecting a three-run lead, couldn’t find the strike zone. Schwarber walked with the bases loaded, and Bryce Harper ripped a two-run double to right-center, tying the game at 8-8 and silencing the PNC Park crowd.

Extra innings brought more misery. In the top of the 10th, the Phillies took their first lead of the night when Brandon Marsh doubled home Alec Bohm off Dennis Santana (2-3). Rafael Marchan, who entered in the ninth, added two more runs with a single to left-center, making it 11-8.

The Pirates fought back in the bottom half, with Konnor Griffin’s groundout to third allowing Ryan O’Hearn to score, cutting the lead to 11-9. But Orion Kerkering shut the door, stranding the tying run on base and handing Pittsburgh a gut-wrenching loss.

For Pirates fans, it was another night of “what ifs” as the bullpen continues to struggle. With the team showing fight early, the late-inning collapses are becoming a troubling trend—one that will need fixing fast if Pittsburgh hopes to stay in the playoff picture.
