Cornish Pirates' upcoming match against Ealing Trailfinders is to be the club's "toughest" of the season, the club's joint-head coach has said.

The Cornish Pirates are bracing for their biggest test of the season this Saturday: a trip to face the unbeaten Ealing Trailfinders. Joint-head coach Gavin Cattle has labeled the Championship clash the club's "toughest" match, setting the stage for a classic underdog battle.

Coming off a dominant 57-21 victory over Chinnor, the Pirates sit sixth and hold the final playoff spot. Their confidence is high, but the challenge ahead is monumental. Ealing sits atop the league with a perfect 23-0 record and handed the Pirates a 41-14 defeat back in December.

"I think we can cause most teams in this league a bit of bother, but this is the toughest match in many ways," Cattle told BBC Radio Cornwall. He praised Ealing as "about as close as you can get to being Premiership ready," citing their depth, coaching, and resources.

The Pirates' task is made harder by a combination of injuries and loan restrictions, which Cattle says leaves the squad at its "weakest point in terms of availability." Key players Tomiwa Agbongbon, Matt Cannon, and Harry Yates, on loan from Ealing, are blocked from facing their parent club.

Despite the daunting odds, Cattle sees a path to a moral victory. He emphasized the importance of chasing a four-try bonus point, a strategic target that could prove crucial in the tight playoff race. "We've got to chip away with those tries... and who knows what could happen," he said, embracing the underdog role. "If you're in the game in the last 20 minutes, pressure can do some funny things."

This matchup is more than just a game; it's a measure of the Pirates' resilience and a chance to shake up the Championship hierarchy against its most dominant force.
