The Bucs got some bad news today.

The Pittsburgh Pirates received some tough news on Tuesday, as Major League Baseball handed down suspensions following a heated incident in Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. Pitcher Chris Devenski will miss the first two games of the Diamondbacks series, while manager Don Kelly is set to sit out Tuesday’s contest. Both penalties come with undisclosed fines.

The drama unfolded in the seventh inning when Reds prospect Sal Stewart stepped out of the batter’s box, disrupting Devenski’s rhythm. Words were exchanged, and moments later, Devenski’s pitch sailed inside, sparking frustration from Stewart. Crew chief Alan Porter determined the pitch was intentional, leading to Devenski’s ejection. He was replaced by Yohan Ramirez, who promptly got Stewart to fly out to right field.

Devenski, a 10-year MLB veteran with no history of throwing at batters, firmly denied any malicious intent. “It was just a pitch that missed the spot,” he said after the game. Stewart, who went 0-for-13 in the series against Pittsburgh, saw his struggles continue as the Reds were swept.

This suspension couldn’t come at a worse time for the Pirates, who have leaned heavily on their bullpen early this season. Through 35 games, Pirates relievers have logged 143 2/3 innings, the sixth-most in MLB. Losing Devenski for two games puts additional strain on an already busy bullpen.

On the bright side, Kelly’s absence is brief. Bench coach Kristopher Negrón will step in as manager for Tuesday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with Kelly expected back on Wednesday for Paul Skenes’ start. For a team fighting to stay competitive, every game—and every arm—matters.
