Mitch Keller delivered a masterclass on the mound for six shutout innings, but a surprising early exit after just 75 pitches proved costly for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The San Diego Padres capitalized on the bullpen change, erupting for a decisive 8-2 victory in Wednesday afternoon's rubber match at PNC Park.

Keller was in complete command, stifling the Padres' lineup and leaving with a pristine line. However, the Pirates' decision to pull him quickly backfired. In the top of the seventh, reliever Justin Lawrence was greeted rudely. Nick Castellanos laced a two-run double, and Jake Cronenworth followed with a two-run homer to right-center, transforming a pitchers' duel into a 4-0 Padres lead.

To their credit, the Pirates showed immediate fight in the bottom half of the inning. Konnor Griffin's sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Joey Bart cut the deficit in half, chasing Padres starter Michael King and making it a 4-2 ballgame.

Any momentum was squandered in the ninth, however, as sloppy defense took over. Two errors behind José Urquidy gifted the Padres four unearned runs, providing more than enough insurance for closer Mason Miller, a Bethel Park native, to seal the series win for San Diego in the ninth.
