Pittsburgh Pirates fans have some drama to keep an eye on as Major League Baseball handed down suspensions to reliever Chris Devenski and manager Don Kelly this week. Devenski originally faced a three-game ban but settled for a two-game suspension, while Kelly received a one-game penalty.
The trouble started during Saturday's matchup against the Cincinnati Reds, a game that was already lopsided at 15-6. In the top of the seventh inning, Reds second baseman Sal Stewart called for a timeout just as Devenski was coming set on the mound. Right after the pause, Devenski fired a sinker well inside, missing the plate and buzzing Stewart. The rookie wasn't happy about it, and things escalated quickly.
The umpires huddled up for a lengthy discussion before crew chief Alan Porter decided to eject Devenski from the game. "I'm coming hard in right there," Devenski explained afterward. "Been around the game a long time. If I was going to do anything like that, OK, but not there, not in that situation. I'm trying to get outs."
Devenski will serve his suspension over the first two games of Pittsburgh's series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting tonight. Manager Don Kelly will sit out the first game of that series on Tuesday night.
For a Pirates team looking to build momentum, losing a reliever and their bench boss—even briefly—adds an extra layer of challenge. It's a reminder that emotions can run high in the heat of competition, and sometimes even a questionable pitch can lead to a costly timeout off the field.
