The Pittsburgh Pirates are turning heads this season with a surprising 21-17 start, and for the first time in nearly a decade, playoff baseball in the Steel City looks like a real possibility. Sitting third in the National League Central—five games behind the red-hot Chicago Cubs (26-12)—the Pirates are making a strong case for a wild-card berth.

It's been a long drought for Pittsburgh, which hasn't seen postseason action since 2015, when they fell 1-0 to the Cubs in the Wild Card round. But according to MLB.com's Thomas Harrigan, that could change this year. Harrigan ranked the Pirates as the second-biggest surprise team with a shot at the playoffs, right behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

"The Pirates may be in fourth place in the surprising NL Central right now, but they’ve outscored their opponents by 23 runs and are mere percentage points behind the Brewers in the race for the third NL Wild Card spot," Harrigan wrote. "Pittsburgh’s revamped offense is legit, especially with rookie phenom Konnor Griffin starting to find his form, and its rotation has MLB’s lowest FIP (3.30). Reigning NL Cy Young winner Paul Skenes had a rough Opening Day start against the Mets, but he’s looked like his typical self over his past seven starts (1.31 ERA), and the Bucs have also gotten strong performances from Mitch Keller (2.85 ERA) and Braxton Ashcraft (3.02 ERA)."

The numbers back up the buzz. Pittsburgh boasts one of the best starting staffs in baseball, ranking fifth in ERA (3.51). The top three in the rotation—right-handers Paul Skenes (2.36 ERA), Mitch Keller (2.87 ERA), and Braxton Ashcraft (3.02 ERA)—are delivering ace-level performances. With a revamped lineup and a pitching staff that's finding its groove, the Pirates are proving they're more than just a feel-good story.

Whether they can sustain this momentum and snap that playoff drought remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Pittsburgh is playing with a swagger that has fans and analysts alike taking notice.
