The Pittsburgh Pirates are off to an impressive start in 2026, sitting at 23-20 and just four games back in the NL Central. While they're currently in fourth place, they're only 1.5 games out of a Wild Card spot—and there's plenty of reason for optimism beyond ace Paul Skenes and top prospect Konnor Griffin.
Offseason additions like Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn have paid off nicely, but one big-money signing has been a major disappointment. Veteran slugger Marcell Ozuna, signed to a $12 million deal in February to provide power from the designated hitter spot, has struggled mightily. As Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently noted, the 35-year-old is posting career-worst numbers in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, while striking out at his highest rate since 2014.
Ozuna was supposed to be the final piece of the Pirates' puzzle—a proven bat to anchor the lineup. Instead, he's been a liability. And with the team in the thick of the playoff race, patience is wearing thin. If Ozuna can't turn things around soon, Pittsburgh has some intriguing—and fun—replacement options waiting in the wings.
One name to watch is Jhostynxon Garcia, a 23-year-old outfield prospect acquired from the Boston Red Sox this offseason. Garcia has been swinging a solid bat in the minors, hitting .253 with six home runs and a .781 OPS in 87 at-bats. As a right-handed power bat, he could slot right into the DH role and provide the spark the Pirates need.
For Ozuna, the clock is ticking. With the team surging and exciting young talent knocking on the door, he needs to find his groove fast—or risk watching someone else take his spot in the lineup.
