Gerard Piqué, the legendary former Barcelona and Spain defender, has been handed a two-month suspension by the Spanish football federation following a heated altercation with a match official. The incident occurred after his team, FC Andorra—which Piqué co-owns—suffered a 1-0 loss to Albacete in Spain's second division last week.
According to referee Alonso de Ena Wolf's post-match report, Piqué made pointed remarks, including telling the official to "leave with an escort so nobody attacks you" and adding, "in another country they would beat you up, but here in Andorra we are a civilised country." The disciplinary committee ruled that the comments constituted "notorious and public acts that undermine sporting dignity and decorum," leading to the ban.
The fallout didn't stop with Piqué. Club president Ferran Vilaseca received a four-month suspension, while sporting director Jaume Nogues was also banned for his role in the confrontation. FC Andorra currently sits 10th in the Segunda División table, a far cry from the heights Piqué experienced as a player.
For those who remember his iconic career, Piqué's transition from pitch to boardroom has been eventful. He hung up his boots in 2022 after a glittering stint at Barcelona, where he won nine La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies, and was a cornerstone of Spain's historic 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship triumphs. Now, as an owner, he's learning that the passion of the game doesn't fade—it just takes on new forms.
