After more than a decade without city-sponsored programs, youth sports are making a major comeback in University Place. In a unanimous vote, the City Council has approved a partnership with the YMCA to launch a new slate of youth leagues and skills clinics, bringing organized basketball, volleyball, soccer, flag football, and T-ball back to the community.
The rollout begins this summer with skills clinics for basketball, volleyball, and soccer, offering a perfect opportunity for kids to sharpen their fundamentals. The programming will then expand into full league play, with a basketball league starting this fall. Winter 2027 will introduce volleyball and flag football leagues, followed by soccer and T-ball/coach pitch in the spring of 2027.
This initiative is designed with accessibility in mind. Registration for clinics is set at $65 for University Place residents and YMCA members, while league participation costs $95. The programs will primarily utilize UP park and school district facilities, with the YMCA providing staffing and promotion.
The path to approval wasn't without its hurdles. The agreement faced initial opposition from established local clubs, like the University Place Soccer Club, which expressed concerns over competition for players and field space. In a key compromise, the YMCA agreed to schedule its soccer league for the spring instead of the fall to avoid direct conflict with the existing club's season.
City officials emphasized that the ultimate goal is to maximize opportunities for children. "Ultimately, it’s about providing the most access to the most kids to get out there and play sports," said Public Works Director Jack Ecklund. The hope is that the new recreational leagues will generate excitement and complement existing programs, offering options for all skill levels and fostering a deeper culture of youth athletics in University Place.
