Phumi Nkuta has been regarded as a top flyweight prospect for years – but UFC matchmakers apparently thought differently.

For years, Phumi Nkuta has been touted as one of the top flyweight prospects in MMA—a fighter with the skills, the mic presence, and the backing of elite teammates like Merab Dvalishvili and Aljamain Sterling. But despite his dominant undefeated record and a highlight reel of impressive finishes, UFC matchmakers seemed to have other plans. The call he was waiting for simply never came.

At 11-0, Nkuta did everything he could to force the issue. He cut promos, campaigned for his shot, and tried to twist the arm of UFC matchmaker Mick Maynard. But the more he pushed, the more frustrated he became. That is, until he decided to let go.

"I know for a lot of people there were frustrations," Nkuta told MMA Junkie. "But at a certain point, I just kind of stopped really caring about all that. I'm enjoying my life as a fighter in general. I love my day in, day out. I love the fact that I get to train hard and I get to be part of these camps for guys like Alex Perez, and then I get to go in there and do my thing myself. So for me, the frustration went away a long time ago. Am I relieved that I get this opportunity? Absolutely. But man, I was enjoying my life before I got this opportunity."

The shift in mindset didn't happen overnight. Nkuta credits a heartfelt conversation with his mother for giving him a new perspective on his career. "She was like, 'Look, you've already won so many belts. You've already gone further than what you thought you could make of this sport. Regardless, we're all so proud of you, and you've accomplished so much in this sport already,'" he recalled. "So for me, there's no pressure."

And then, as if the universe was listening, opportunity finally knocked. When Mohammad Mokaev ran into visa issues and Adriano Moraes needed a new opponent, Most Valuable Promotions had a problem—and Nkuta had the answer. The fighter who had stopped chasing the spotlight suddenly found himself sharing a card with the very names that once lined his college dorm room walls. Sometimes, the best fights come when you stop looking for them.
