LOYSBURG, Pa. – When you're the defending state champion, every meet comes with a target on your back. For Conemaugh Township senior Baylee Sleek, that pressure is nothing new—and neither is winning.

Sleek, the reigning PIAA Class 2A high jump champion, entered the District 5 championships as the overwhelming favorite. She didn't disappoint, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches to claim her third consecutive district title and punch her ticket to the state meet in Shippensburg on May 22-23.

But the path to gold wasn't easy. Gusty winds turned the competition into a battle of adaptability. "Today's events were very tricky as the wind was not helping in either of my events," Sleek said. "I didn't get the height that I was hoping to jump, but I still did good and got first."

Sleek cleared every height on her first attempt through 5-6, but the wind made a run at 5-8 impossible. "The wind just started picking up harder and harder, so it was getting harder to jump," she added.

While Sleek shined individually, the Bedford girls proved once again that teamwork makes the dream work. The Bisons captured their sixth consecutive District 5-2A team title in commanding fashion, piling up 154 points—well ahead of runner-up Conemaugh Township (96). Windber (72), Berlin Brothersvalley (67), and host Northern Bedford County (47) rounded out the top five.

"The girls really competed hard in adverse conditions," Bedford coach Brian Creps said. "The wind was crazy at the start and then the rain at the end. We had some kids place way above their seeded times and throws. It was a total team effort."

The weather was a major storyline. Heavy winds battered the first half of the meet, then rain and lightning forced a 90-minute delay at 5:20 p.m. When competition resumed, Bedford's athletes showed their resilience.

Sophomore Keira Koontz was a standout, winning the 100-meter hurdles in 16.67 seconds—edging Sleek (17.28)—and anchoring two winning relay teams. "Towards the end I just pushed myself through," Koontz said. "I felt like I was running against a brick wall, but you've just got to make do. It definitely means a lot to me. I made it last year too. It's a goal to make it each year and each time do better and better and get my time down."

Grace Brallier also delivered, taking the 400 meters and contributing to two winning relays. And for Alyssa Leydig, a single opportunity this season turned into a moment she'll never forget.

From defending champions to rising stars, District 5 proved that greatness isn't just about talent—it's about thriving when conditions are toughest. Whether you're chasing state gold or just your personal best, that's a lesson every athlete can wear with pride.
