PHOENIX — The Phoenix Mercury bounced back from their short two-game skid, taking a 91-83 win over the Chicago Sky that showcased the defensive identity they’ve hung their hat on. Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (25) screams after a call during a game at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix on May 15, 2026.

The Phoenix Mercury reminded everyone what they’re all about on Wednesday night: defense. After a brief two-game skid, the team stormed back with a commanding 91-83 victory over the Chicago Sky at Mortgage Matchup Center, putting their signature defensive identity front and center.

It wasn’t just a win—it was a statement. The Mercury had been searching for their rhythm through the season’s opening stretch, dealing with roster changes and quick turnarounds. A tight game against the Minnesota Lynx and a near-comeback against the Golden State Valkyries left the team feeling like something was missing. But two days off gave Phoenix exactly what it needed: time to reset, refocus, and rediscover its foundation.

Head coach Nate Tibbetts made it clear what the priority was: defense first. He challenged his squad to bring energy, passion, and toughness on that end of the floor, while executing their game plans offensively. Against a retooled Chicago Sky roster, that balance was crucial. The Mercury answered the call, controlling the game on both sides of the ball from the opening tip.

“I feel like there’s still change coming,” Tibbetts said after the game. “But not at the rate that we had. I think we’re starting to solidify ourselves. We’re getting closer, and I think all of us are feeling better about that.”

The chemistry was evident. Jovana Nogic delivered a career night, pouring in a team-high 27 points to lead the Mercury to a double-digit second-half lead. Phoenix shot efficiently throughout the contest and seized control early, taking a 45-35 advantage into halftime and pushing the lead to as many as 17 points.

But the real story was on defense. Phoenix’s pressure forced Chicago into difficult looks all night, disrupting their rhythm and setting the tone for a performance that felt like a turning point. For a team still finding its footing, this win showed that when the Mercury lock in on defense, they’re a force to be reckoned with.
