The Philadelphia Phillies have made a surprising roster move, cutting ties with veteran outfielder Oscar Mercado just months after bringing him back into the organization. The five-year MLB veteran was released from the team's Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, on Sunday, according to the transaction log.
Mercado's return to the Phillies was brief but not without promise. The 30-year-old outfielder signed a minor-league deal in March after a short spring training stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he posted a .242/.265/.333 slash line over 34 plate appearances. The Phillies clearly remembered his strong 2023 campaign with the IronPigs, where he showed impressive plate discipline and speed. Over 115 games and 477 plate appearances, Mercado slashed .249/.369/.373 with 11 home runs and 40 stolen bases, while drawing more walks (14.5%) than strikeouts (14.3%).
This move comes amid a hot streak for the Phillies, who have won four straight series since bench coach Don Mattingly took over managerial duties for the long-time skipper Rob Thomson. The change at the top has sparked a turnaround, with the starting pitching staff finding its rhythm and key position players stepping up. Infielder Alec Bohm returned to form after taking a brief hitting break at Mattingly's suggestion, while outfielder Brandon Marsh has surged to become MLB's overall batting average leader.
For Mercado, this marks another chapter in his career journey. He originally joined the Phillies organization in 2022, appearing in just one big-league at-bat for the club. While his latest stint didn't lead to a permanent spot, his solid numbers in the minors last season suggest he could still find opportunities elsewhere. Teams looking for a versatile outfielder with speed and on-base skills may take notice of his availability.
