Aaron Nola delivered a masterful performance on Monday night, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. The right-hander tossed six shutout innings, allowing just five hits while striking out five and issuing zero walks on 94 pitches.
This start marked a significant turnaround for Nola, who had struggled with control in his previous outings. After walking seven batters combined over his last two starts (spanning just eight innings), Monday's clean sheet was exactly what the doctor ordered. "I hadn't been doing my job much this year," Nola admitted postgame. "I hadn't been putting the hitters in the best chance to score. But today, I tried to put up as many zeros as possible and limit the damage."
The only run of the game came courtesy of Bryce Harper's solo home run, giving Nola all the support he needed. This series win marks just the second of the season for the Phillies, following back-to-back series victories against the Nationals and Rockies in early April.
While Nola's overall numbers still show room for improvement—he's now 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in 37.1 innings—Monday's outing cut his ERA down from 6.03. For a pitcher who has finished in the top 10 of Cy Young Award voting three times (2018, 2020, and 2022) and placed 11th in 2024, this performance could be the spark he needs to rediscover his All-Star form.
If Nola can build on this momentum, the Phillies' rotation could be in for a serious boost as they look to climb back into contention.
