Former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers comments on how close he was to playing with Jason Campbell in Auburn during the mid-2000s.

Imagine a world where Philip Rivers and Jason Campbell lined up in the same backfield for the Auburn Tigers. It almost happened, and now the two legendary quarterbacks are sharing a stage in the Senior Bowl Hall of Fame.

At the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 3, Rivers sat down with AL.com and opened up about the "what if" that still makes fans wonder. Growing up in Athens, Alabama, Rivers was heavily recruited by Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville. But there was one catch: the Tigers already had Campbell locked in as their quarterback of the future.

"It's funny because I always tell the story of being recruited out of high school and Jason was the quarterback that ended up at Auburn," Rivers recalled. "Had I chose that path, I may have been his tight end, if I'd gone to Auburn there in 2000."

That's right—one of the NFL's most prolific passers nearly traded in his quarterback dreams for a tight end role. Instead, Rivers took his talents to North Carolina State, where he became a college star and eventually a first-round pick.

Both Rivers and Campbell came from the same recruiting class of 2000, with Rivers at Athens High School in Alabama and Campbell at Taylorsville High in Mississippi. Fast forward to the 2004 NFL Draft, and the pair made history in very different ways. Rivers went No. 4 overall to the New York Giants before being traded to the Chargers in that famous Eli Manning swap. Campbell was selected at No. 25 by Washington, becoming part of a historic first round that featured multiple Tigers.

Their pro careers took divergent paths. Campbell carved out a solid 10-year career, suiting up for Washington, Oakland (now Las Vegas), Chicago, Cleveland, and Cincinnati. He finished with 87 touchdowns and 16,771 passing yards—a testament to his durability and talent.

Rivers, meanwhile, became a Chargers icon, spending 16 seasons in San Diego and Los Angeles before a final year with the Indianapolis Colts in 2020. After retirement, he traded the NFL sideline for the high school gridiron, taking over as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Fairhope, Alabama.

Now, both are forever linked as Senior Bowl Hall of Famers—a fitting honor for two quarterbacks who, in another timeline, might have been teammates creating magic on the Plains.
