When you're the Philadelphia Eagles and your general manager is Howie Roseman, the rumor mill never really takes a day off. That's been especially true this offseason, as the team has been at the center of some serious trade chatter.
Just a few weeks ago, on draft weekend, the Eagles made a splashy move by landing Pro Bowl pass rusher Jonathan Greenard from the Minnesota Vikings. But if you've been paying attention, that wasn't the headline everyone's been buzzing about. The real story—the one that's practically an open secret—involves one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the game.
For months, the NFL world has been waiting for the other shoe to drop: a potential trade of three-time Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Brown. While the New England Patriots have emerged as the most likely landing spot, nothing is set in stone just yet. According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the writing is very much on the wall.
"You like how I slipped that in there? Let me put it this way, A.J. Brown's not at these workouts, so it's sort of understood right now," Fowler told reporters. He was referring to the offseason workouts organized by Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, which have notably gone on without Brown in attendance.
Fowler also dropped another key observation: DeVonta Smith has effectively become the Eagles' new No. 1 receiver. That title once belonged to Brown, but Smith actually led the team in receiving yards in 2025—the first time he's done so since Brown arrived via trade in 2022. It's a subtle but significant shift in the team's offensive hierarchy.
For all intents and purposes, everyone inside the Eagles organization seems to be operating under the assumption that Brown won't be in Philadelphia for the 2026 season. Whether he ends up in New England or elsewhere, one thing is clear: the Eagles are moving forward, and Brown's departure feels less like a question of "if" and more like a question of "when."
