The Philadelphia 76ers have officially parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey, the team announced Tuesday, following a disappointing sweep by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The move marks the end of a six-year tenure that saw the franchise consistently fall short of championship aspirations.
During Morey's time at the helm, the 76ers posted a solid 270-212 regular-season record but managed just a 28-26 postseason mark. The team never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, a frustrating trend that extended beyond Morey's arrival. Joel Embiid set an NBA record for most second-round playoff losses in six consecutive appearances, a streak that began before Morey took over on November 2, 2020.
One notable highlight came earlier this postseason when the 76ers rallied from a 3-1 deficit to upset the No. 2 seed Boston Celtics in the first round. However, that momentum quickly evaporated against the Knicks, leaving fans and ownership searching for answers.
Bob Myers, President of Sports for Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), will lead the search for Morey's replacement and oversee basketball operations in the interim. Myers brings a championship pedigree, having constructed four NBA title-winning teams during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl personally and professionally, and I'm grateful for his contributions over the last six seasons," said 76ers Managing Partner Josh Harris in a statement. "After speaking with Daryl, we determined that it was time for a fresh start. Bob Myers will lead the process of identifying a new leader, and I believe his experience in constructing four NBA championship teams will be a valuable resource to our organization."
Harris also addressed the fan base directly: "To our fans, your frustration and disappointment are understandable and warranted. We have fallen well short of our own expectations and failed to deliver in the way this city deserves. That bothers me deeply, and I have confidence in Bob to help us turn the page."
For 76ers fans, this offseason now brings both uncertainty and hope. As the franchise searches for new leadership, the focus shifts to building around Embiid and finally breaking through the second-round ceiling that has defined this era of Philadelphia basketball.
