DeChambeau had a brutal opening nine and things didn't get much better after he made the turn.

Bryson DeChambeau had a rough start at the 2026 PGA Championship, and his opening round at Aronimink only got more confusing from there. After carding a 39 on the back nine—his first nine of the day—things didn't improve much when he made the turn. At the par-4 second hole, DeChambeau found himself in a bizarre rules situation that left him scratching his head.

Struggling with a case of the "rights" all day, DeChambeau's tee shot on No. 2 sailed so far off target that it ended up on the steps of a hospitality tent. That's when the confusion set in. In a conversation captured by ESPN, DeChambeau asked a rules official, "I'm so confused right now. I thought TIO (temporary immovable obstruction) you get one club length and then drop on the next?"

It turns out DeChambeau was on the right track with his interpretation. After clarifying the rule, he was able to take relief—getting that second club length and dropping in the proper area. "Is there relief on this path?" he asked. "Oh, it is, that's what I thought."

Once the ruling was sorted, DeChambeau showed why he's a two-time U.S. Open champion. He hit a beautiful approach shot to 22 feet and calmly two-putted for par—one of the few bright spots in a tough round. As of now, he's sitting at seven over par with just one hole remaining, a far cry from the form that has made him a fan favorite and a force in major championships.

For golf fans, this kind of quirky moment is classic Bryson—analytical, unfiltered, and always thinking outside the box. Even when things aren't going his way, he finds a way to make the game entertaining.
