Marco Bezzecchi’s form in MotoGP reflects what can happen when a rider and team are in perfect sync, according to Peter Bom.

Bezzecchi has joined elite company by becoming just the third rider in the MotoGP era to win five straight races, following in the footsteps of Marc Marquez and Valentino Rossi.

He also surpassed Jorge Lorenzo’s record for consecutive laps led during the United States Grand Prix. His run began late last season and has carried over into 2026, putting him squarely in the title picture.

Bezzecchi has finished third in the standings four times across his Grand Prix career – once in Moto3, once in Moto2 and twice in MotoGP.

Only 25 riders in the history of the premier class have reached double figures for victories, but Bezzecchi’s next win will see him join that group. He is also in the top 40 all-time for podium finishes (21).

Bom doesn’t see him as a ‘super talent’, even if he does admire how Bezzecchi steps up when it matters. Bom believes that Aprilia is the ideal fit, and together they’ve found something that works.

Speaking on the Oxley Bom podcast, he said: “Apparently, he gets a lot better when everything’s on the line and everything is about the main race, the main points. When it really has to be done, he’s quite special.

“I never considered him, and I still don’t consider him, a super talent, but he’s a very good example of a guy that grows a lot more than you think he would ever do because he’s in the right moment with the right manufacturer.

“He was involved in that project from day one. He wanted to do it with them.”

Bezzecchi is aiming to join five other current riders who have won top-level titles, and he would be the first to do so by directly beating Marquez under equal circumstances.

When Joan Mir, Fabio Quartararo and Francesco Bagnaia won their championships, Marquez was either injured or facing significant disadvantages. In 2024, he was on an older Ducati model, which put him at a clear disadvantage against Jorge Martin.

Mat Oxley said: “We haven’t seen anybody this strong since Marc Marquez. We had Fabio Quartararo win a championship, we had Pecco Bagnaia win two championships, we had Jorge Martin win a championship, but none of them were doing what Marco Bezzecchi’s doing this year.”

Despite his dominance on Sundays, Bezzecchi currently leads the standings by just four points over Martin. He has crashed out of two Sprint races so far this season—a pattern he’ll need to fix if he wants to stay in front.
