Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira was full of praise for his star striker Chris Wood and the team's "spirit" after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

The match's decisive moment came from the penalty spot, with Wood calmly slotting home after Lucas Digne was penalized for a handball. It was a crucial goal that gave Forest a slender advantage heading into the second leg.

What makes Wood's contribution even more remarkable is that the New Zealand international only recently returned to action earlier this month after missing the majority of the season with a knee injury. Pereira couldn't hide his admiration for the striker's resilience and impact.

"Chris Wood is not only a top player but he's a player that has the spirit, the experience," Pereira said. "He gives us a lot and we are in a good moment with a good spirit."

The Portuguese boss also emphasized how the entire squad has stepped up during Forest's impressive recent run of form, highlighting the collective effort that has propelled the team forward.

"We changed the players but we did not change the spirit to compete," Pereira added. "It's only half time and I know we will face another tough game. But one thing I am sure is that we go there to compete again, not to defend, but to win the game."

With the second leg looming, Pereira's confidence in his team's mentality is clear. "Everyone is ready to compete and help the team at this moment which makes me proud," he said, signaling that Forest are far from satisfied with just a one-goal lead.
