Pep Guardiola has thrown his full support behind Marc Guehi after the defender's costly mistake almost derailed Manchester City's title hopes in Monday's thrilling 3-3 draw against Everton at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The 25-year-old England international's underhit backpass to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was pounced on by Everton striker Thierno Barry, who slotted home to level the score at 1-1. That error sparked a worrying collapse, with the Toffees racing to a 3-1 lead before Jeremy Doku's dramatic 97th-minute equaliser salvaged a point for Guardiola's side.
But rather than dwell on the error, Guardiola was quick to highlight Guehi's overall contribution. "He made a top game," the City boss said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday's home clash with Brentford. "He knows he made a mistake, but it's part of the game. Apart from that, he made a top game."
Guehi himself has already taken full responsibility, issuing a public statement after the match that resonated well within the dressing room. It's the kind of accountability that Guardiola values highly, especially from a player who only arrived from Crystal Palace for £20 million in January.
Since his move, Guehi has been one of City's most reliable performers, forming a solid defensive partnership with Abdukodir Khusanov while Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol were sidelined. Both defenders have now returned to full first-team training, with Guardiola praising the duo as "extraordinary" in the buildup to this weekend's fixture.
This public backing from Guardiola is significant. Known for emphasising collective responsibility when individual errors occur, the City manager's message is clear: mistakes happen, but what defines a player is how they respond. For Guehi, that response has already been exemplary—both on and off the pitch.
