Penn State hockey is making history on the international stage. Freshman forward Gavin McKenna has been named to Team Canada's roster for the 2026 IIHF World Championship, marking the first time a Nittany Lion will compete in the prestigious tournament.
The tournament runs from May 15-31 in Switzerland, and McKenna's selection comes as no surprise to those who have watched his dominant freshman campaign. Widely regarded as the consensus No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, the Whitehorse native has already cemented his legacy in Happy Valley.
McKenna shattered the program's single-season freshman scoring record with 51 points, one of nine program records he set this season. His remarkable performance earned him Big Ten Hockey Freshman of the Year honors, All-American recognition, and a spot in the Hobey Baker Top 10—awarded to college hockey's best player.
Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky praised McKenna's adaptability and consistency throughout the year. "What he's done in terms of how he's done it to play with 10 different linemates—this guy's just had an incredible year," Gadowsky said last month.
For Nittany Lions fans, seeing one of their own wear the Maple Leaf is a proud moment—and a sign that Penn State hockey is producing elite talent ready for the world's biggest stages.
