The countdown is on for Penn State football fans as one of their top recruiting targets has locked in a decision date. Four-star running back Aiden Gibson, the No. 8 overall prospect in South Carolina, will announce his college commitment on Tuesday, May 12 at 7 p.m. ET.

Gibson is a game-changing talent who would instantly elevate the Nittany Lions' backfield. Known for his elite vision and body control, he put together a dominant junior season that turned heads nationwide. Carrying the ball 205 times, he racked up 1,611 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns—an eye-popping 7.9 yards per carry. He also proved his versatility as a receiver, adding 387 yards and four more scores through the air. A dual-threat weapon like Gibson could be the missing piece for head coach Matt Campbell's offense.

However, securing his signature won't be a walk in the park. Rutgers, Louisville, and his home-state South Carolina Gamecocks are all firmly in the mix. While Penn State boasts the strongest national profile among his finalists, Gibson has plenty to weigh. He recently took an unofficial visit to Happy Valley and has an official visit scheduled for the weekend of June 12. But with three more official visits lined up after that, the competition is far from over.

Landing Gibson would be a massive win for Penn State's 2027 recruiting class. He would be the first running back commit and potentially the fifth four-star signee in what's already shaping up to be a loaded group. For Nittany Lions fans, May 12 can't come soon enough.
