The Nittany Lions have been making waves on the recruiting trail under Matt Campbell, exceeding expectations in Happy Valley. But every rise has its falls, and Penn State just suffered one of its most painful setbacks yet—losing a top-tier edge rusher from the tri-state area.
On May 1, four-star defensive end Aiden O'Neill from Ramsey, New Jersey, committed to Notre Dame, snubbing the Nittany Lions. It's a tough pill to swallow, especially as Penn State had been building serious momentum. While the Blue and White quickly bounced back by securing Stanley Montgomery, a talented edge rusher from Philadelphia, the sting of O'Neill's decision lingers. Imagine the duo of Montgomery and O'Neill lining up on opposite ends of the defensive front—a dream that now will have to wait.
O'Neill, a standout at Don Bosco Prep, put up elite numbers in his junior season: 45 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and six sacks. That kind of production would have made him a cornerstone in Penn State's evolving defensive scheme. But according to reports, it was Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman's track record that sealed the deal. "I think his long history of coaching up guys, creating defensive ends, I just think it is going to be the perfect match," O'Neill said. "I feel like we are going to do great things together."
What makes this loss even more bitter for Nittany Lions fans is that O'Neill had scheduled an official visit to Penn State—but now, his attention is solely on South Bend.
Still, there's reason for optimism. Matt Campbell's approach to recruiting the defensive line has been sharp, and with Stanley Montgomery in the fold, Penn State has a future building block on the edge. And who knows? If O'Neill ever grows restless in Notre Dame's system, the door in Happy Valley might still be open down the road.
