College football spring games are valuable ways for coaching staffs to gauge the talent on their roster and to help determine depth chart orders. Penn State got used to playing their annual Blue-White game a certain way under former coach James Franklin, but Matt Campbell has described a different approach to the final spring practice.

In a press conference with the media on Tuesday, Campbell spoke to reporters about the format that will be in place for the game. The Nittany Lions’ first-year coach told reporters that the first half-hour or so will be more like a typical practice, where the team will do some stretching and run 7-on-7 drills.

But from there on, Campbell envisions the rest of the day as a conventional Blue-White games, with live reps and a scrimmage between the offense and defense. When the former Iowa State coach first spoke about an altered format, it was unclear if the team would actually play a real game.

But now it’s clear that they will, which should give the staff some insight on the progress made by the young players on the roster and the maturation of the upperclassmen. The Nittany Lions will take the field in front of fans this Saturday, April 25.
