In a major recruiting victory for head coach Matt Campbell, Penn State football has secured its first marquee quarterback commit of the 2027 cycle, landing Will Wood from Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, Massachusetts.

While the Nittany Lions missed out on top Massachusetts prospect Peter Bourque—who chose Virginia Tech over Penn State—they quickly pivoted to Wood, who committed on Friday, May 15. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound signal-caller is rated among the nation's top 30 quarterbacks by major recruiting services and picked Penn State over Boston College, Arkansas, West Virginia, Wake Forest, and Maryland.

Wood's commitment fills a critical need for Campbell, who has rapidly assembled a Top 10 recruiting class since March. Known for his ability to extend plays with his legs, Wood fits the mold of Campbell's past quarterback success stories, including current starter Rocco Becht and former star Brock Purdy.

The Nittany Lions didn't stop there. Wood became the third verbal commitment of the week, joining a pair of talented running backs: South Carolina four-star Aiden Gibson (6-1, 212 pounds) and New Jersey's Chukwuma Odoh (6-foot, 220 pounds).

With 18 members now on board, Penn State's 2027 class ranks sixth nationally according to 247Sports and 14th by Rivals—a remarkable climb from zero commitments just a few months ago. For Campbell and his staff, landing a quarterback of Wood's caliber is a statement that the Nittany Lions are building for sustained success.
