Penn State men's basketball is adding a seasoned floor general to its backcourt for the 2026-27 campaign. Head coach Mike Rhoades announced the signing of veteran guard Jay Rodgers, who will utilize his final year of eligibility in Happy Valley.
Rodgers arrives after a standout senior season at Central Connecticut State, where the 6-foot-3 Ohio native averaged 11.0 points and an impressive 6.9 assists per game—a mark that ranked eighth-best nationally in Division I. His playmaking earned him Northeast Conference second-team honors, and he etched his name in the program's history books by becoming just the second Blue Devil ever to dish out over 200 assists in a single season.
This addition brings valuable experience and proven distribution skills to the Nittany Lions' roster. Rodgers is a true point guard who can also stretch the floor, having shot 36.2% from three-point range last season while starting 28 games.
His journey to Penn State showcases his resilience. After missing most of the 2023-24 season and all of 2024-25 due to injury, Rodgers bounced back with a career year. His path also included a prolific stint at Cochise College, where he was an NJCAA honorable mention All-American and a deadly shooter, connecting on over 40% of his attempts from beyond the arc.
Coach Rhoades highlighted the immediate impact Rodgers is expected to make: "Jay is a veteran guard who has developed into one of the premiere distributors in college basketball... He is a playmaker who can create for both himself and his teammates at a high level." For a Penn State team looking to solidify its backcourt, landing a proven, high-assist guard like Rodgers is a significant move.
