Penn State men's basketball has secured its first addition from the transfer portal this offseason, landing a commitment from former Central Connecticut State guard Jay Rodgers. The move comes as head coach Mike Rhoades works to rebuild a roster that has seen significant turnover.

Rodgers announced his decision to join the Nittany Lions via Instagram on Sunday. The veteran guard brings immediate experience, having averaged 11.0 points per game last season while earning Second-Team All-Northeast Conference honors. He started 28 of his 30 appearances, logging nearly 30 minutes per contest for the Blue Devils.

This marks the third collegiate stop for Rodgers, who will utilize his final season of eligibility in State College. His journey includes a season at New Orleans, a stint in junior college, and two productive years at Central Connecticut State, showcasing the well-traveled path many modern players take to find the right fit.

His arrival addresses a critical need for Penn State, which has lost several key pieces to the portal, including potential upperclassmen Freddie Dilione V, Eli Rice, and Dominick Stewart, as well as promising freshman Kayden Mingo. Rodgers' proven scoring and backcourt savvy will be vital for a team seeking stability and leadership.

While Rodgers is the first stateside transfer pickup, Penn State has also bolstered its frontcourt with international additions Roko Prkačin and François Wibaut. However, with five scholarship spots still open, Rhoades and his staff remain active in the portal's final days, aiming to construct a competitive roster for the tough Big Ten slate ahead.
