When you step into the shoes of a state champion quarterback, the spotlight doesn't just shine—it burns. But for Pedro Martinez, the pressure isn't a burden; it's fuel.
Taking over as Cardinal Newman's new signal-caller, Martinez inherits a role once held by Jyron Hughley, now at West Virginia. Hughley was a legend in his own right, throwing for 2,018 yards, rushing for 1,528 yards, and accounting for 36 touchdowns in 2025—including both scores in the Crusaders' historic Class 1A state championship win. That's a tough act to follow, but Martinez isn't shying away.
"I know it's a lot of pressure," Martinez says. "Jyron Hughley, he was that guy for sure. It's definitely a lot of pressure, but I'll step up to it. I know the work I put in."
And that work ethic is already turning heads. At 5-foot-11 and 176 pounds, Martinez may not have Hughley's imposing 6-foot-2, 195-pound frame, but he's a dual-threat quarterback with pinpoint accuracy. Last season at Atlantic, he completed 169 of 264 passes for 2,238 yards and 33 touchdowns, while adding 483 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. His leadership helped the Eagles start 9-0 and reach the regional semifinals.
Crusaders coach Jack Daniels has taken notice. "First off, he's a great leader. Extremely hard worker. Love the way he understands the game and gets rid of the ball. I love watching the way he moves out here in practice every day."
With Martinez under center, Cardinal Newman's offense will look different this year. While Hughley could run over defenders, Martinez brings a more finesse-based, accurate passing game that could keep defenses guessing. "I know I'm coming into a coaching staff that knows what I can do," Martinez says. "It's definitely going to be a different offense, different looks this year."
For a program fresh off its first-ever state title, change can be daunting. But for Pedro Martinez, it's just another challenge to embrace—and conquer.
